The City of El Monte aims to extend educational opportunities to the broader community with the development of the Tyler Campus. Partnered with Rio Hondo College and Options, a child care services agency, the project provides an educational facility for both adults and children.
Rio Hondo will occupy a 12,400 square foot, 2-story building, with capacity for 260 students. Options will have 3 individual classroom buildings for a total capacity of 75 students. By separating these two entities, it allows for open space between them to function as a secure play yard for children. These two buildings are also linked by an outdoor entry court that serves as a drop-off point and waiting area for the students. With safety being an important factor, especially for the child care facility, this entry court meets those needs while still providing a pedestrian friendly and inviting frontage to the street.
The Tyler Campus buildings maintain the existing context and character of the neighborhood through scale, and by incorporating some design elements that are prevalent, thereby creating a learning facility that is integral to the community.
